moon roof rattle

I have a 97 saab 9000 Aero. Love it. Over the past two years the moonroof has started to develop a rattling problem. I have checked the visible screws and bolts and given them a tightening, but still have the problem. I have noticed that the rattling is worse when I have a rack on the roof. I think the rack causes suction when I am at 50 to 70 mph.
It rattles like a bastard at any speed higher than that. I have dumped the roof rack and am now starting to see the same problem increasing W/O the rack!
I took the car to my local Saab indie and he looked at me woefully and explains the whole thing needs to be replaced and that it will cost a "ton of money". I guess the replacement involves tearing the headliner and trim out and a lot of work from there.
If this is the case is it simple to obtain the parts and do it myself or is there a simpler explanation for the rattle?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
