Switching to synthetics too, but which weight?

So I just read the post this morning about switching to synthetic motor oil. I have my first oil change coming up, 1990 9KT 100K, just bought it in the fall. I really don't care what brand, I figure they are all the same, it is the weight that I don't know about. I see some who use 0W 40, some swear by 5W 30. What gives? What is wrong with 10W 30? Any input would be great. Thanks.
