There is more difference between synthetics than there is between non-synthetics. For some of the differences, go to the AMSOIL website and look at the comparative oil tests.
Over the past 26 years, I've changed a number of personal Saabs to AMSOIL synthetics. Most of these had about 100,000 miles on them when I got them.
First one was AMSOIL 10W-40, because that was the only viscosity available at the time. Since then, I've used 10W-30, and, once it became available, 0W-30.
Sure, an xW-50 will work. But, unless your engine is worn enough to have wider clearance which require a higher viscosity, you'll probably do well with an xW-30 or xW-40. The higher the viscosity, the more the internal friction (more heat and reduced fuel economy).
I'd also recommend using a good engine flush first. For quick flush, the best I know of are made by AMSOIL and BG. For a slower flush, I've heard a lot of good things about Auto-Rx. If you don't, or won't, flush, just watch the oil level. If you see a sudden increase in consumption, change the filter and top off. You might want to change the first batch of synthetic after 5-7,000 miles, particularly if you don't flush.
