My crank is not broken and my flywheel is ok...I changed my timing chain and sprocket less than 2 years ago (55 000 KM or 34 000 mi). So when my car stalled and was cranking like there was no compression I thought "could the timing chain have snapped?". So I removed the valve cover and and realised the chain was there and thight. I then cranked the motor with the starter while sitting in the car and watching the camshafts...they did not turn. I assumed that the crank was not turning hence my diagnosis broken flywheel or broken crank ...WRONG! I had a used tranny waiting to go in since about a full year since the one in the car had worn synchros in most gears. I made the switch and realised my stupid mistake.
Now I think the sprocket has to be worn to the point where it cannot turn the chain. I will know today but I am pretty upset that this happens in such a short period of time and mileage. When I changed these parts it was mostly preventive as I had to change a burnt valve and was already in there. DAMN!
