Sure, you can quite easily yank out the existing gear, assuming you have the U shaped DIN tools to pull the head unit and EQ/amp out. There's really no use leaving the EQ in there if you are putting an aftermarket head unit in.

Once you get the deck out, you will see that you can remove the wiring harness from a plug behind the deck. Some places (such as Crutchfield) will supply you a new connector that will plug into the Saab harness behind the deck, but of course you still need to attach the wires on this connector to the harness on the deck. However, if you never plan to use or sell the old deck, you can easily cut the wires off it and re-use it's plug for the new deck. You will need to know which wires are which. There are two connectors behind the dash, one for power/ground/illumination/antenna/etc, and one for the four speakers. I have the audio systems manual for 1987 if you need to know which wires carry which signal.

Once the old stuff is out, putting a new deck in is as simple as inserting the sleeve, bending the tabs, plugging in the harnesses once you have connected them to the deck harness, and sliding the deck in to the sleeve.

The hardest part is finding a deck that looks good in the dash. Blaupunkt used to make some that looked even better than the stock deck, but I guess that style went out in 1998.
