the 9000 is a light year from the C900 in just about every way. Yeah, there's more to go wrong and there are certain things you have to deal with, but this is a good move. I was also considering the NG 900 and the 9-3, but went for the extra space and looks of the 9000.
Mine is a 96 CSE manual and it has been painless for the past 10K miles--just turned 100K last week. Auto trans will have their issues (and manulas aren't perfect, either), but look at this way--as you hit 100K many cars these days are heading toward a rebuilt trans, so just budget for it. Maybe you'll be lucky.
However, look at and drive a bunch of cars if you can. I noticed a lot of difference between cars, and it took me about a year to find a good one, but in truth I wasn't looking hard. I was just ready when the right one came along.
