i have about 125k miles on my auto tranny and it is still running well. Keeping good care of one will get you well past 150-200k miles (replcing transmission fluid on regular basis). I know most people will tell you that the saab auto transmissions are bad...but its your call. I've never had any problems with mine at all.
The 9000 auto transmission is certainly better than the three-speed 900 one; and honestly the cost of maintining it will probably work out the same in the end, even if you do end up replacing it at 150-200k (at that point most stick shifts will have gone through a clutch or two, maybe some other work)
Switching from the 900 to the 9000 is a choice that i made a couple years ago, and have no regrets at all about. my 9000 is much more comfortable, roomy, quieter, and i honestly 'feel' safer in it.
In terms of a 4 cylinder engine, the 2.3L Saab engine is one of the best ones i can think of. They can easily take you to 300k miles without any sign of wear (something that you wouldn't really expect from a Japanese car). With a turbo the engine is quick and responsive, but will still give you gas mileage in the range of 25-30 mpg.Your call on this one...for my $.02, if i was to get another car today, without hesitation i'd get another 9000.
