A year ago we gave our 85 SPG to my brother. He's away for a few days, so I'm going to do a little work to try to buy it a little more time. Anyway, I went to pick it up tonight-- what a difference! It's sort of more fun than the 9000, and it just looks great, but after just a short drive I feel tired.
Everything seems a little out of reach in it... it turns in much more nimbly, but once you get moving that turns into a sort of nervousness... The shifter and clutch are hopeless-- the shifter is rough, the syncros are reluctant, and the clutch had NO feel. And the power.... well, there's not much. And this is not a badly maintained car. It runs great, the clutch has been fixed in different ways by different mechanics (but never seems to get better), the tranny was rebuilt not too long ago. Still, it's a lot more work to drive than a 9000, and takes a lot more skill and understanding.
One thing that is much better is the size and location of the sunroof. And the visibility past the A-pillars.
Still a great looking car, still fun, but SO much less civilized than the 9000. Oh, and LOUD.
