I use the long bar approach, from the top. I've got a nice long breaker bar. Like the others, I move the coolant reservoir and PS reservoir out of the way. My preference is to slide the belt onto the idler pulley last, as it has the smallest lip.
The real trick to compressing the tensioner is NOT TO PUSH HARD. What? Yes, push SLOWLY. The spring isn't that strong, there is a major damper force that resists fast motion. When you put the bar/socket on, try to have the breaker bar as close to the front of the car as you can, so you get the most swing. Then press firmly and slowly. Give it 30 seconds or more. The tensioner will compress slowly with suprisingly little force. Once compressed, it doesn't take that much force to keep it in place, so you can slip the belt on with the other hand. The other advantage of the "go slow" approach is you're less likely to have the bar come off the bolt and do damage.
