Your symptoms sound similar to mine that I had last January in my 88 turbo.
I had the master cylinder replaced. Fixed the problem for a while, but not permanently. My indy stated that when he replaces a master cylinder, it seems that about 50% of the time, the slave goes as well. Hopefully, it really is just the master in your case.
I would start with renewing the brake/clutch fluid if it hasn't been done in the last year. Bleeding out the fluid will eliminate the fluid as the problem.
Just so you know, a slave cylinder is doable as a DIY repair. It IS a LOT of work (which is why it costs so much--the slave is less than $200), but I did it last summer in my backyard. This was my first time I did any kind of work on my car (no oil changes, fluid changes, etc.). It really is just getting a lot of stuff out of the way to get to the slave.
If you decide to go the DIY route, feel free to post here--you'll get plenty of help. I know I did.
