...let's figure it out!
Ok... so... my mechanic forgot to connect the vacuum line to my FPR, among other things... but my car ran regardless...
...i drove it for over 3,000 miles without thr FPR connected to anything... i even drove at speeds of over 100mph!!!!
Of course, the problem has been fixed, and luckily no major engine damage resulted... i am the luckiest man alive! ;)
anyways... think about this for a minute...
If the car is idling, and the vacuum reading is 20hg in VAC, and the FPR IS NOT CONNECTED... then the FPR is seeing ZERO PSI... and the car is as a result, running EXTREMLY RICH at idle...
...this is because the FPR thinks the car is boosting, from the zero psi "reading" it's getting...
so rich at idle.. however... LEAN AT BOOST!
Once the boost pressure goes over ZERO psi, then the car begins to run lean... because any positive reading isn't being transmitted to the FPR by vacuum line!
SO... fromm that, you can gather that a leaky FPR diaphagm would sort of do the same thing... just not as dramatic...
A little rich at idle, a little lean under boost, because the pressure san "seep" in and out of the diaphragm...
Does that make sense to you? If you have any doubts... try sucking on the FPR vac line, while it's connected to the FPR, if you get gas in your mouth(?) or you can suck air, then you got a leak... if you don't but still have doubts... then by all means change it! It could slowly ruin your engine!
