Better performance.....especially in cold weather?

What's the deal with these K+N air filters? Do you just replace your OEM filter with it? I've read some posting that make it sound more extensive than that. If so, removing parts before the AMM sounds a bit silly to me. Is this fuss worth it?
But.....
Some refer to it being "open", and thus pulling on air from under the hood. If that's the case, this could be a good thing for my winter warm up times. The Alaskan winters can be hell on warming up an engine, so I figure that pulling in warmer air can only help.
