solenoid directly. The amount of current going through the coil when connecting directly to the car battery can burn the wiring in the coil as the coil has very little resistance.

There is a little metal disk that sits in between the solenoid poles, just blow on all vacuum terminals and the disk should move. Under normal conditions, i.e. with the BPC dried out, you can shake the BPC and you should hear a faint rattle, and that is the disk rattling inside its cage (so to speak :-). When you start squirting liquid into the valve, surface adhesion would probably bind the disk to one of the poles and you won't hear the rattle when wet.

Yes, you would find metallic residuals coming out the of BPC lines when you try to clean it. I surmise that the dust probably from wear of the disk when it vibrates and rubs between the poles.

If you have a known dead BPC, cut it apart and you would see there really isn't much in there that is worth even close to a tiny fraction of $200 unless the solenoid coil windings were silver or gold plated 8-).
