Rough idle/disappearing coolant

Uh oh... (1995 9000 Aero 5 sp. 175K miles.) Yesterday noticed that the idle was rough. Coolant was low in the res. I have recently replaced the water pump and coolant hoses.
This morning I filled the reservoir with distilled water and drove to work. After 20 miles of highway driving, the check radiator light comes back on. Intermittant. Get to work, pop hood, and the res is basecally empty with a whitish frothy material coming out of the radiator overflow into the reservoir. No coolant smell in the exhaust. Definately sounds like it's missing at idle.
Blown head gasket? This car never gets the temp up past 8:00PM on the guage. Usually pegged at 7:00 PM.
Tonight I plan to check the plugs (replaced 2500 miles ago) and see if I can dig up my compression tester.
Any thought of what else to check would be great!
