Rolling in a new chain without doing the sprockets and guides is like only changing the serpentine belt without inspecting all of the pulleys and the tensioner: it may make you feel okay, but you're just whistling in the dark.
My alternator threw its pulley not too long ago, causing the serp belt to jump off track. My first diagnosis was this should be simple: all I have to do is put the belt back on. That same serp belt has been running for 2000 miles after I replaced the alternator.
Timing chains don't 'stretch' or get 'old and tired'. They jump off track because something they're riding on is worn or is not providing sufficient tension. A noisy chain is slapping because the tensioner or the sprockets are worn.
Maybe I'm being too simplistic, but when my bike chain jumped the sprocket it was never the chain's fault.
