All NORMAL batteries vent gasses. Even if just a little. This reacts with the lead posts and terminals and causes them to corrode. The best, 100% flawless way to prevent corrosion is a gel-cell battery, like an optima or some other kind of sealed gel cell since they have no gasses to vent, and no way to went them. Not only that but their awesome for hot weather environments, since there is no water in them to evaporate. Which means for anyone who goes four wheelin', you can get creative in your battery mounting, upside down if you wanted.
The next best thing is to coat the terminals with some kind of corrosion inhibitor. There are all sorts of tales of using vaseline to coat them, olive oil and who knows what else. The best stuff I've seen is at a car parts store made by permatex. Ask the counter guy for it and he'll show you. You have to re-spray it every six months or so, but I think it's a small price to pay to keep the battery charging right and your car running right.
Hope it helps!
