I am having my water pump replaced (i think - see story below) and I wanted to see what I should expect to pay for this (time in labour at least) and what else should I do while they are in there. Are there other things that are best fixed now if there is a lot of strip down to get to this area? Timing chain, head gasket (which currently has a small lower right corner leak) or pulleys, etc. Serp belt is only 10k old and had one new pully put on during that install.
Any advice would be helpful.

I was on my way home yesterday from the NASCAR race in Bristol and after 7 hours on the road my water pump finlly gave out. Well I think it is my water pump because last time I had my car in I asked what was making a noise under the hood and they said it was the bearings in my pump. So I am pretty sure after hearing this noise get progressively louder on my trip that this was the failure.
First the check radiator light came on (not radiator level which I guess makes sense but I wasn't quite sure how it would know that the pump was going) I am guessing there is a sensor that indicates if the flow of coolant is nonexistant.
So after the light came on I drove about another 25 miles before the temp gauge started to rise. It got up close to red a few times then back down and finally stayed up there so I wisely killed the engine and called AAA.
When I stopped there was coolant on the ground and it looked like it was coming from the belt side of the block. Does the failure of a water pump usually result in leakage? Blown seal? Just curious.
I hope no damage was done to the car after driving for 25 miles after light came on cause the temp was fine until the end.
I broke down only 10 miles from home on a 300+ mile trip so I was very thankful. AAA has paid off for me cause this is my 2nd coolant system related town in 2 months.
