In general, the newer, the better. Saab improved the cars through the years, although from '96 through '98, mostly in terms of what options were included.
Depends on what you want. For comfort and power, I'd stick with a '96 through '98 CSE. For a little less money, the low-pressure turbo '96-98 CS is nice. Some came as optioned up as the CSE, some less so (no sunroof or leather). The CS isn't as fast as a CSE, but goes along just fine.
Automatic tranny cars tend to have less horsepower than manual tranny cars. Part is due to losses in the autobox, but the engines are de-tuned in autobox cars to prolong the life of the transmission. The automatic tranny is a bit of a troublespot, typically lasting 80-120K miles, but some lasting forever. Don't let an automatic scare you if you want one, but if you prefer manuals, wait for one. Manuals are rarer, though.
In terms of older models, the 91.5 9000T is a nice one- probably as much HP as any later model Aero. Just be aware that it's a 14 year old car and probably beaten up a bit. But if you like to fiddle with cars, they can be found cheap. Wait for a clean one.
91-93 2.3 liter cars had soft balance shaft sprockets - nice to avoid. The '92-95 turbos came with Traction Control (TCS), and some other models as an option. Can be a problem. Again, I wouldn't not buy a car with TCS, just not #1 on the list.
The V6 in the 9000 is good to avoid. Timing belt problems and other maintenance issues. Not to be confused with the V6 in the 9-5, which is pretty reliable. Some folks swear by the 9000 V6, but it seems the majority swear at it.
