First, thanks for the feedback. Even for the simple stuff, it's nice to know that was the problem.
Second, it NEVER hurts to ask. I have seen folks replace fuel pumps because of a bad fuse, and major engine work because the car was simply out of gas.
My basic rules of fixing things-
1. Right after you do work is the most likely time for something to be broken.
2. Don't assume causality. As in your case, if you replace the coolant and the temp gauge doesn't work, don't assume it was the coolant. Assume you knocked the wire off when working in the area.
3. Things break where they are already broken. Connectors are natural breaks. Wires rarely fail in the middle without a lot of help - Connectors are a few hundred times less reliable than the wire connecting them.
4. Always start with the simplest, most basic things. They are usually the cheapest and easiest to fix.
