I've got a '92, albeit not a turbo. Same 2.3 block. When I replaced the main pulley (aka "Harmonic Balancer") I saw the crankshaft position sensor directly behind it. In fact, I needed to remove the crankshaft position shutter wheel from the old pulley and install it on the new one.
Also, up high on the engine, below the manifold, there isn't anything that is rotating at crankshaft speed. The only thing that is up there would be a balance shaft or a cam, and they would not provide crank position directly.
Whereabouts in the Haynes manual do you see this? I wouldn't be able to check my Haynes until tonight, but now I'm curious.
