Was in England this past April. There were no posted speed limits on the motorways, none. But everyone seems to know (as I later found out) that the national speed limit is 70 mph. I was in a rented measely 1.6L Astra with three other passengers and luggage filled to the tilt. The Brits whizzed by me one by one on the motorways. I mean they do drive fast. Not less than we do here. The fact I am not used to driving on the wrong side of the raod certainly doesn't help.
I know I probably would have gotton something in the mail if I have rented a 2.2L Astra. The Imperial bureaucrats do have long arms, not to mention the pervasive use of CCTV's on the street of London. Parking fees are required almost everywhere. Can you imagine parking meter in highway rest stops? Four pounds if you stay at the rest stop more than four hours, if I remember correctly. I overstayed on a parking meter for two minutes near the B&B I stayed just inside the congestion zone near Kings Cross one morning. I got a 100 pound parking ticket. That's 180 dollars and change. Avis charged something like $25 fee processing the ticket on my credit card on top of it. Faced with the prospect of potentially being denied entry into the UK next time around when they found out I have an outstanding parking ticket, I sent the parking fine in full.
No. I would not want to live in England.
