T-stat operation

Don't worry, this isn't another "is my engine getting too hot?" question....
I recently replaced the thermostat in my '90 turbo (first time its been replaced since I've had it - both new and old are 89 deg t-stats). After replacement, my temp gauge now heats up to 9 o'clock, then slowly creeps up to 10 - 10:30, then back down to 9 as the t-stat opens and closes. Is this normal? I've heard from others on the BB that their temp gauge stays quite static, which would seem to imply that the t-stat cycles the coolant to the radiator more frequently.
The old t-stat wouldn't close properly, so the temp would drop going down a hill, for example. Consequently, I'm not sure what's "normal".
