3 l V6 in the 9000; 2.5l in the 900 - US market Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Buying a '95 9000CSE V6, Josh, Tue, 28 Sep 2004 09:09:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The V6 in the 900(SE) was the 2.5 liter. The V6 in the 9000 was the 3.0l. This is the US market I'm referring to. Simply go to the bottom of this page, and click on Model Info, and check it out. Again, different markets had different engines available.
Both the 2.5 and 3.0 l V6 available in the 900 and 9000 had reliability problems. Not major, don't last to the next oil change problems, but for folks used to 200K mile 2.0 liter fours, problems. The timing belt didn't last nearly as long as Saab thought it would - the fix was to replace it sooner. There were other maintenance issues, like difficulty replacing the thermostat without removing the intake manifold.
This is a totally different V6 than offered in the 9-5, which may actually be a bit better than the 2.3.
That said, I wouldn't run screaming from a V6 9000. I would, however, not buy one. The 2.3l in the late model 9000 is a real gem of an engine, and should last for a very, very long time. It's also lighter, which provides better acceleration and handling.
A '96 and later 9000 CSE (full turbo) will produce more horsepower and torque than the V6. The autobox CSE has 10 fewer HP than the V6, but 38 ft-lbs more torque at much lower rpm.
My recommendation is to look for a '96 or later 9000CS or CSE, 4-cylinder. The CS is a very nice car, and yes, you can easily convert it to full pressure, but after driving it, you may find that you don't need to. And the turbo CSE is a hoot and a half, in both manual and automatic trannies. There are cars out there - wait for them. And yes, there are fewer V6's, and fewer every day.
