Interesting that there is another mode, perhaps a feature or a glitch? I have an 88 with 370,000 km. I haven't seen the mode you describe but have noticed that occassionally when switching to temp it will take a while to display the temperature. It eventually does what it was asked to do but just takes it time.
The EDU on my 96 CS is essentially the same, except that it was more options for displaying different combinations of units. I haven't yet seen the slow response that I've seen on the 88.
