Not sure the '97s are set up the same way but, I have a '93 that I had to replace the shift linkage coupling joint out in the engine compartment. Some of the symptoms were similar to what you described--mine failed completely one day and I could not get any low range gears. The jumping out of gear sensation could be caused by moving the shift lever before the clutch is fully released. You may want to make sure that the clutch hydraulics are all OK. I could not find any mechanical problems with mine so I blamed my lack of coordination, particularly early in the morning on the way to work. I've cured that on mine by driving for economy (most of the time).
