Well, they should and if they don't, then there's something wrong. A more constructive thing to do would be to check the shift-coupler. There's rubber in there, used to dampen vibrations and sound that could be transmitted to the driver. If it's worn, not uncommon, then the shifter will feel kinda sloppy. There's also plastic bushings on the shift rod, where it connects to the gear changer. Anyway, there is a procedure to make sure it's aligned properly with the selector shaft from the gearbox. There's a plastic plug in the gearbox that covers a hole, into which a pin is placed, while in 4th gear. There's also a hole at the top of the gear lever housing, into which a pin is placed to lock it in 4th. When these two points are locked, the loosened bolt/nut arrangement that holds the shift coupler to the selector shaft can be tightened. It should result in smooth shifts on the '94-98 transaxles.
