Heat gun is tricky , at best

When this happened to me, I bought a white replacement fitting (the only one that is availble as a separate item)and removed the check valve so that it would operate as a return line connection. However, when I tried to heat the line with a head gun, the line blistered and the resulting connection was pretty sad looking, but it worked. I also tried the flaring tool route, but could only get the fitting on partway.
I finally replaced the entire fuel line. Afterwards, I learned that the best way to heat the line is to bring a pot of pure antifreeze (glycol) to a boil and to heat the line in the boiling liquid. The fitting should then shove right on. However, how you bring a pot of boiling antifreeze to the line without removing the line from the car seems to me to be problematic. There is also the very real safety issue of using a high heat source near the gas tank.
