If your friend had thought about it he most likely would have picked up that bad potentiometer using the live data function of Tech 2.
I don't know why there is different part numbers on the auto and manual, but not only that; it is different partnumbers on the manual potentiometer with a split in 94 1/2 with engine number R107415.
The latest one have gold plated pins.
It might be that it is possible to install an auto potentiometer in a manual car but not vice versa.
The auto one might have some extra function inside as to how to keep the shifting pattern correct for the ASR and KDW.
Since the one you put in there doesn't have gold plated contacts it "might" be a chance for future contact problems.
