AMG,
1. Thanks for info on ECON re: cycling AC power drag. I thought about your idle some more and the only other thing I can think of is a really uneven idle that I had when I first bought my 93 CSE, it would happen intermittently. I swapped DI's, ran fuel injector cleaner, swapped in new NGK plugs, and it stopped happening. It was most apparent at idle, and then would go away as I drove, usually, but sometimes it would stay through acceleration and even at low speeds, then it seemed to disappear.
It hasn't happened since I did those changes, except for a very very occasional first few seconds of running, when it starts up very rough (like my 442 did when it needed a serious valve job after 20+ years) and then magically clears up.
I haven't figured it out. Forgot about it actually for awhile because I thought the problem was gone until it surprised me a couple days ago, I'd call it stumbling until it gets its smooth footing. Only other thing I've noticed on the car (runs phenomenally otherwise) is that on cold starts I have to crank it for 2-3 seconds, instead of the normal just starts right up that I'm used to. I'm guessing I'm losing fuel pressure somewhere??
Also, I had a 95 Subaru with a rough idle that developed at the same time I lost gas mileage performance. I had everything checked on the car because I wanted to sell with a clear conscience. I replaced wires, plugs, ran countless bottles of fuel injector cleaner, car tested fine on Subaru computers. Only thing that an indy finally turned up was that the 02 sensor was reading slightly off, which was their only guess, even though techicallly I think it might have still been within spec range.
Later I remembered that I had the water pump and timing belt changed somewhere around the time I noticed the idle and I happened to hear on Click and Clack that the timing belt can be put on incorrectly, but still run fine, just a little off, and I've wondering ever since if that was the problem. Not sure if it can relate to saab's timing chain though.
2. Why does AC cycle when OFF?
