Draining back into the reservoir. Pressure from the pump causes the fluid to flow up the line and fill the pipe to the valve and then the nozzle where it squirts out. Removing that pressure would normally allow the fluid to drain back down through the line to the lower nozzles (like the ones on the headlights) by gravity; the check valves plug the return path of the fluid when the pump pressure subsides by sliding back with the gravity flow.
