Thanks Gavin for your response.
My main concern is to work out whether there is excessive play in the steering column bearings that is causing strain to be put on the plastic surrounds.
I could file plastic away but that would be dealing with the symptom rather than the cause. Of course I may finish up doing just that but at the moment I am enjoying the lack of creaking with the cover residing in the trunk.
This reminds me of my late father who owned a 1982 Mazda 929 sedan. The front mudflaps became a nuisance when they frequently scrapped on the road surface. My father's cure was to cut two inches off the bottom of the flaps and he was happy. When he gave me the car I found it rode like a billy cart because the front springs had sagged badly and when you drove over a bump the suspension would hit bottom out. The first thing I did was replace the springs all round which lifted the car two inches and caused the mudflaps to be too short!
