Mine was a '92 as well. 2.3T DI/APC/LH2.4.2 with TCS and auto transmission. Great car but with the early ETS version of course. Produced late '91 and one of the first with the new body style.
I had it happen once or twice to have the TCS light on with no LHM. I didn't pay much attention to it as during the same period I had intermittent anti-lock warnings on speed bumps, and just assumed the two were related. The TCS system will disable if it thinks the ABS is faulty.
The TCS is not much more than a computer under your seat. AS an input it uses the ABS system, to interfere it uses the ETS system. And the brakes on manual trans cars. IT can disable if it thinks it has a fault, or of one of the connected systems has one.
Right under the TCS ECU is the ETS ECU. That is the ECU that will put you in LHM if it receives a fault code. OF course the TCS will swith off as well simultaneously.
The trouble is that the ETS system is a ' super-secure' system, because if it goes out of control, you might lose all control over the car. So it is a bit paranoid, and any irregularity will make it revert to the mechanical back up.
Isolated TCS-only faults do not occurr ofter in this forum. The ECUs, both TCS and ETS seem to be fairly reliable. The ETB, safety valve and pedal pot are the crucial parts of the ETS, with the vacuum hoses of course.
I assume you had the codes read and reset at one moment in time. A bad connection or ground on the TCS computer is the first thing I would look for.
I was just so surprised when I did not find the ETS fuse installed in my V6, then could not find teh relay, and finally looking under my seat did not find an ETS computer... :-))) oh well..
