Teh TCS of the V6 does not affect any other system in the car, as it is totally different from the I4 system. The other confusion is that if people are talking about the 'dreaded TCS' on the I4, they are actually NOT referring to the TCS, but the ETS (electronic throttle) system that comes with it.
The V6 does not have ETS, and is perfectly drivable with the TCS system crapped up. Do a search on older posts of mine. I think I have explained this in more detail once or twice.
There is a lot of ' consensus' on this board on the V6, but what strikes me is that most of this 'consensus' comes from people who do not own such a model, and I doubt that they have ever driven it. People who own one seems to think mostly that it's an ok car.
There was a post on belt failure on the board recently, but oterhwise I haven't seen one for ages. Then again there are not many around. Something you have to consider for future maintainability.
I have owned a 2.3T AND a V6 simultaneously. And owned or have driven almost any guise of 9k over the years. I will not say the V6 is better than the I4, far from it, but the I4 has it's probelms as well (my 2.3T HAD the 'dreaded' ETS). It's just different. FWIW, the '95 CDE V6 is the most trouble-free of the 9k's that I have owned. Coincidence, I know, but I still own it next to my new 9-3SS.
Still, if the TCS OFF light is on, I would be seriously concerned, because for me it indicates a less than serious treatment of the car's maintenance. I for one would not accept my car to have this. I would fix it or have it fixed. It might be something minor, maybe not.
If belt AND tensioner have been changed at 60k, and all regular maintenance has been performed, AND you can get the seller to get the TCS in working order AND there are no other imperfections (does the AC work properly, to name an expensive and annoying one) ADN you still like it, just go for it and manage it along the way as the others that hang out here do.
Best of luck,
Jan Geert
