Anyone had a bad temp gauge?

Hi All,
On the ’86 9kT that I have as a project car, the temp gauge rises extremely quickly. I put a thermoprobe under the t-stat housing, which suggests the car is actually running at the correct temperature. The fans come on a temperature that confirms this (by this point the temp gauge is at the top of the red). Swapping the sender off the ’87 doesn’t fix the problem, so I assume it must be the gauge.
Has anyone else had a gauge fail in this way? Seems odd to me. Could it be the wiring? Is the gauge replaceable by itself, or does the whole instrument cluster need to be removed?
Thanks!
Craig
