because your thermoprobe and fans come on. I really don't know how you can get your termoprobe into the coolant stream to measure the precise temp, but I assume you are able somehow.
YOu should be able to get the specs on the temp sensor and the gague, then be able to check their operation with a mulitmeter.
Now I will describe my situation to you. I had a problem with my 9000 running hot during the daytime and on the freeway. In the city it stayed just above the normal, but not in the red. Ruled out thermostat, fan switches, flushed system...twice, pressure checked for cyl head leaks. Nothing!
Took the radiator to the shop to have it power flushed and it was constricted by years of driving with hard water in the tank rather than distilled. The work of the previous owner. New radiator eliminated any memory of hot running condition.
I am not saying that your problem doesn't lie within the gague, but I would try to do some checking before ripping it all apart and replacing the cluster.
Good Luck
D
