I have never fully bought the arguements for using synthetic oil. Its expensive, highly overrated, and seems to encourage leaks. When I bought my first Saab in 1985 from the oldest Saab dealer in Pittsburgh he told me that at one time Wolf's Head oil from Pennsylvania crude was the only U.S. oil that Saab recommended (Its ironic but am not sure if it is still PA oil since Pennzoil took over the company) . In any case, we have used Wolf's Head 10W 30 year round in all our Saabs since then and have never had to have any work done on the engines or turbos and never had to add oil between changes. I believe what is most important is to change the oil every 3 to 4 throusand miles. High detergent oils are designed to keep the crud and small metalic bits in suspension so often changes clean the engine. It seldom goes below 0 degrees F. in the Pittsburgh area so one might consider 5W 30 farther north.
