Several reasons. Dino oil is OK...

as long as you change it religiously (the syn vs dino being a "religious" discussion, anyway!). I used to do this--changing evey 3-5 K on various cars. I decided I have better things to do than change oil.
With synthetic, I like the extra cold start lubrication when it is very cold (single digits and below zero are not uncommon in NH where I live), the ability to handle heat better, and the longer change intervals. I also I don't think it's environmentally sound to be taking 4-5 quarts of oil out of a car every few months. Motor oil has a disposal issue and a resource issue. Running Mobil 1 for 2X as long as dino, puts half the disposal strain on the environment and doesn't use up resources as quickly. Sure, synthetic is about 2.5X as expensive, but my time is worth something, too, and since I change my own oil on 2 vehicles, it probably works out about even. If it costs more it's what $5?
I put my 9000 on syn just after I bought it at 90K miles--it had always used dino oil. No leaks 14K later. I put my wife's Explorer on syn at 102K, no leaks now at ~118K, and consumption is less. With the info available, syn just makes more sense to me. My old C900 ran all it's life on dino oil changed at 5K. No issues. Both work, it's just how you look at stuff.
