When the car stalls and fails to restart, does the tachometer bounce while the engine is cranking? If not, there's a fault in the ignition system. You've ruled out the ignition amplifier (which do go bad and produce those exact symptoms). So, that leaves the hall effect pickup inside the distributor, which Rick mentioned, or the ignition coil. My money is on the pickup, coils seems highly reliable, and would be far less affected by heat than the distributor.
I've had both the ignition amp and the hall effect pickup go bad on my car, a couple years apart. I had a used distributor put in and it's been fine ever since, I think that was about four years ago. I don't recall if our year's distributor can be rebuilt or not, but the question really is, do want to take all that time and effort to rebuild it, or just swap in a new/good used distributor? The real bummer is that with this type of problem, it's often intermittent, and you don't really know that it's fixed until it stops occuring.
