I am not an expert on oil by any means! I'm still using Valvoline MaxLife in my two 9000s, 10w-30 weight.
The internet is full of anecdotal information reported as fact--just check out the General BB. There's a post there now about cell phones and fires at gas stations.
However, I do remember seeing a "study" on the bobistheoilguy website where they tested various synthtic oils every 1,000 miles to see how long it could be kept in the car AND do its job. Very interesting reading, but I don't know how much credibility it has in real world applications. If anything, it really illustrated to me how superior synthetic oils are regular stuff.
Why haven't I made the switch? Dino has worked fine so far, and I'm planning to do the headgasket on my 88 in the spring. Maybe then I'll reward the car with synthetic. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
