Abusot,
I used to work with a guy who was a former dealership owner -
he sold it to his brother and went back to school - and he
knew more 'car stuff' than anyone I had ever met.

He said this test was done officially, but that nobody ever
spoke of it because when petroleum is cracked you can get a
heck of alot more thin stuff than thick stuff - so theres $$$
involved more than anything.

Here's the test:
Take 2 equal test tubes, and fill em with equal amounts of
SAE 30 in one and SAE 10w30 in the other.
Heat them equally, and every 50 degrees measure viscosity
until 250 degrees, then holf it steady at around 300, and
measure more frequently to see when the viscosity lets go.

The results he quoted were simple - the 30 was more viscous
to start with and stayed so, where the multi started thinner
and broke down to the equivalent of straight 10 weight in
very short order, and his point was that viscosity equals
lubricity over time, period.

Now, do I use straight 30 in my turbos ? A little - meaning
when I do a change in warmer weather I will add 1 quart
along with the other stuff, and when it gets close to change
time and it is down, I top off with it - but NEVER between
October and the end of May - it's too cold here, and turbos
need oil 100% of the time - so I am an oil change freak
instead.

In my old n/a Ford truck I will use straight 30 or 40 in the
summers, but multi during the plowing months.

In the ancient Cub Cadet tractor - same thing.

My next move looks to be Amsoil for the Aero, but I will
stay with fossil in the '88 because it is a dripper.....

There, that's my 2 cents from Vermont !

Best Wishes,

mark
