It would be my guess that the plugs are the culprit here. This subject has be discussed to death on this site. Go back and read thru the archives. The trionic gets most of its' data inputs concerning combustion through the spark plugs. If the plugs have varying or different resistance, then the computer has no way of giving the correct response when detonation occurs.
Where does it say in any Saab document to use other than NGK's? Your turkey isn't in the driveway - one thing that is undoubtedly over-engineered, on a B234 turbo engine, is the bottom-end and pistons - it's not the cars' fault that the owner wasn't aware of the critical role spark plugs play with the engine management system. I'm truly sorry this happened, but I do think we should all own-up when we make mistakes. As for the cat' cooking the oil theory - purely anecdotal. I've been following this board for a long time. This is the first time I've heard/read of the cat' cooking the oil. Why was the cat' so hot? Perhaps there was an air/fuel issue - too much fuel, maybe? Most of the oil in the sump is beside the cat', not above it. I suppose there's some radiation transfer between the two surfaces, but it would seem to have to be very hot for a very long time, standing still, for it have any effect on the oil's viscosity.
