I'm assuming more than one leak Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 1 Dec 2004 07:15:25 In Reply to: Correct me if I'm wrong Ari..., zeke, Wed, 1 Dec 2004 06:41:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I noted that he said that the head was seeping some, but I'm assuming that unless that has gotten a whole lot worse, that's not the sudden cause of a puddle under the car. I'm assuming that the head is still seeping, but something else has sprung a leak, and that leak is most likely the main seal.
I'm not implying that the main seal leak is showing up as oil at the head gasket. I'm saying that he's probably seeing oil leaking from a few places.
Most older cars are weeping oil from a few places - head, valve cover, etc. As the old British car joke goes, when you don't see oil spots on the driveway, you know the car is out of oil. Mr. Aero noted that a puddle started all of a sudden, so I'm guessing that something else has suddenly cropped up. It's reasonable to assume that oil is getting out of a few places on the engine, and new ones every day or so.
That doesn't mean that the head isn't an issue, but I figure that if the head is leaking enough oil to leave puddles, then there are some major head torque issues that'll show up as burning oil, coolant, and overheating.
