There isn't a whole lot you can do to the tranny other than do a fluid change, as Aaron describes. After you do the flush, It's good to do a fluid change every 15-20K miles or so.
I would just replace the filter - you don't know how long it has been in there. Yes, you can just clean it, as it's just a metal screen. However, there are some O-rings that come in the kit, and it would be nice to replace them. Or just bring the filter down to your local autoparts store to see if they can match the o-rings. If you buy a filter, note that many filter kits come with one extra o-ring - don't go nuts trying to find a place to put it.
The filter cover is held on by three bolts, on the very bottom of the tranny. Drain the tranny first, then remove the filter cover. On the cover is a little rectangular magnet, held on by magnetic grip, so it likes to fall off. Inspect the magnet, then wipe it clean. If it's covered with a fine, almost greasy goo, that's normal - lots of fine metallic particles in tranny fluid. If you see chunks of metal, that's a bad sign - same with the filter - you don't want to be able to identify something as a piece of metal - just a fine sludge.
If you start having shifting problems - harsh shifts, delayed shifts, wrong shift points - then you may think about doing some repairs - like new govenor seals (depending on what's going wrong). But if it works fine, don't mess with it other than fluid change.
