It's not the little flap Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Frozen Door Locks, BZF, Mon, 13 Dec 2004 06:35:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The little flap(door) on the lock only keeps water out of the tumbler. If that freezes up, the most you wouldn't be able to do is turn the tumbler with a key.
A frozen key lock won't keep you from unlocking the door with the electric locks. The tumbler moves a lever, and the electric locks turn a lever. At a minimum, you should be able to lift up the button on the door on the inside, and the door will be unlocked.
Now, if the lock button on the door is up. the issue with frozen isn't the locking mechanism. You might have gotten water into the latch mechanism, and that froze up. When you pull the door handle on the inside, does it move or is it stuck? If it seems to work OK, but the door doesn't open, then the issue is that the door frame itself is frozen to the rubber of the door opening. All that takes is force.
I have had problems with the latch mechanism freezing up, but usually it's after you open the door, the latch doesn't reset - you slam the door closed, and it just bounces right back open. Playing a little heat on the latch mechanism fixes that pretty quick.
