The DI tends to either work or not work. Some go directly from just fine to completely dead. Some give a little warning, like sputtering and misfiring. But a slight hiccup is probably not causing the problem.
About the only test of the DI is to put it on a car and see if the engine runs.
Since one plug is a little darker, you may have a leaky or sticky injector which is stuffing in more fuel to that cylinder than the system calls for. That would cause a darker plug and higher HC. A bad Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) could cause it, or a leak in the hose between the intake manifold and the FPR.
I'd put my money on the FPR. You seem to have the problem at idle. The FPR reduces fuel pressure at idle, because the intake is at vacuum. The amount of fuel that sprays in is a function of pressure differential, so to keep too much fuel from spraying in at idle (high vaccum) fuel pressure is reduced. As the intake gets nearer atmospheric (or above, in the case of the turbo), the FPR increases fuel pressure, in order to squirt the fuel in against the higher internal pressure.
180 vs 291 may be almost a factor of 2, but it's not a lot. You could be running slighty rich, not enough to really see dark plugs, and still miss the HC levels. So I'd check for things that can cause rich running - bad FPR, including one with a leaking diaphram or bad vaccum line; sticky fuel injectors, etc.
