We don't see -30F very often around here anymore, but I agree with what you're saying. Big V8s have have a lower surface to volume ratio and have more potential to run at proper operating temperature at low ambient temperature. I've put cardboard on my Toyota and other trucks with varying amounts of success but haven't tried it on a saab. Usually if you forget the cardboard is in when you hit a warm spell, the temp gauge runs a little high and gives you warning. On my 89s I found a spot once cruising at 70-75 at -20F where my temp gauge never stopped moving--it just oscillated. A friend of mine had a Peugeot Turbodiesel with a very nice grill cover with flaps like the schoolbuses and trucks use. Seems like something like that would be pretty safe especially since it's far away from the radiator.
