It's actually easier to leave the turbo in the car when you remove the head, IMHO. There are just four bolts to remove that connect the turbo to the exhaust manifold. Three are easy to get to with an open end, the other I got from underneath with a socket and a couple of extensions.

I found it hard to put the head on with the turbo still in place though. There was simply too much to try to line up, with the turbo studs, timimg chain, chain guides, and head alingment dowels. It's certainly doable, with some people helping, but I can't help but think it would be easier with the turbo already attached to the exhaust manifold. This seems to be the way that most of the guides recommend, I just chose to ignore it. In the end, either way will work.
