I shelled out the money for the 9000 engine shop manual. They leave the intake manifold and turbo in the car. The fuel injection system is not opened saving a ton of time.
I took three days (well, long nights) to do mine. Removed the head Thursday night. Had head machined on Friday. Installed head Friday night. Finished up install on Saturday.
Some thoughts:
Order replacement exhaust studs and have the machine shop replace them.
Take two of the old head bolts to the machine shop and have them cut the heads off them and fabricate alignment studs.
Use a bunjee cord from the hood to the timing chain to keep the chain on the crank sprocket. This applies steady tension to the chain in an upward direction. Use two when you re-install the head so that you never drop the chain.
Replace the rubber chain guide in the valve cover.
Have a helper to put the head on and off. It's not tremendously heavy but it sucks going on and off. I also had left 3 intake manifold bolts in the head (aligning the intake manifold gasket) and they hung up on the intake manifold and left me holding the cylinder head over the engine for about ten minutes - really pissed off - trying to figure out why it wouldn't settle on the block. That really torqued my neck and I couldn't move for 2 weeks.
All in all a great experience! Saves some cash, though.
