Need winter tires, to stud, or not to stud?

...that is the question!

I've got a 1990 9kt, and i live in upstate NY. It's about to be a real bad winter here, and i'm moving to a small town to accept a job where i have to navigate a terrible BACKroad.

I need to buy some tires that can handle it.

I've got bf goodrich traction T/a's right now, all season garbage, that hardly have any grip at all.

If i kept these on my car, it'd only be a matter of time before i end up off the road on my way to or home from work.

The road in question is about a lane and a half wide, has drop offs on each side, and is in the middle of the woods. It's unclear on how often it will get plowed, but i doubt it will be sanded or salted at all.

So...

i'm going to make an investment in my saftey and sanity. i'll be driving slow on this road, but still...

so... after that rediculously long intro...

Should i get studded tires? or studless tires?

Noise and ride are not an issue for me, i want the best traction, period.

Although i WILL be driving this on the highway from time to time, i also don't care too much about reduced gas mileage...

anyways...

i also have aero wheels, current tire size of 205/50/16. I'd like to only change the tires on the front of the car right now, i'm feeling the x-mas financial squeeze right now, and that's all i can afford if i'm getting high quality tires.

and... so i'd like to keep this tire size.

is that ok to keep a tire in this size for a winter tire? a studded tire?

i noticed on tirerack.com they only had 3 winter only tires available in my size.

My car is lowered, and i dont think i can go to a 55 from a 50, a 205/50/16 rubs briefly in the front under heavy bumps... so...

what do you all suggest for me?

I've been suggested to go with stud-less tires, and blizzaks inparticular... i've also heard and read good things about hokina hakkapelitas on this board.
