went to formels auto yard in great barrington and got a set of saab 15" rims (nice ones) from one of their 9000's that they had at the time for I think $75. snow tires were studded, slightly used Goodyears from a local used tire place, for I think $125 for all four mounted and balanced. They make noise, but work great, and I saved $$, and don't have to pay to remount twice a year, which ADDS up.
I had Blizzaks on my 86 900S and wasn't thrilled with them, but they were ok. Around the same time I had studded snows on my 88 Chevy Cavalier (a gift from grandma when she got a new car and I needed a Boston car) and I could get in and out of anywhere, so I had some comparison, I'd take studded snows over Blizzaks.
The Goodyears, I wish I could remember the #, though they may be out of production by now, are snow tires, with truck like treading that makes noise without studs (I've also had them without studs). Having grown up in Western MA and learned to drive on snowy roads early on, I like studs, but I've done without.
